Not to fight. 30 Day D&D Challenge

I accepted the 30 Day D&D Challenge, and started out with a post a day, and a quickly sketched artwork to illustrate the post. Most of them were done in single sessions, four to five posts at a time, and then scheduled for publication.
Then other tasks became more important, and with the arrival of the favourite monster days my motivation declined.
So, I quit the challenge. It was fun for a while, but the restriction to D&D games dulled it a bit.

What I'm going to do is:
  • create more of my magic items, and prepare a PDF-collection with Scribus which might include a few illustrations done with Krita, or MyPaint.
  • Work on the German translation of Basic Fantasy. Parts 1, 2, 4, 5 are done, 1st level spells are done, and I'm currently onto part 8. I designed a foldable Basic Fantasy character sheet, too, which features all the basic character information, and game mechanics easily accessible for new players. This I will make available as a free download once it has been playtested. (Seriously, I good character sheet is worth a bunch, and I want this to work.) Das Charakterdatenblatt für Basic Fantasy gibt es zuerst auf Deutsch.
  • Write whatever comes to my mind regarding role-playing games.
  • Mehr auf Deutsch schreiben.

Favourite Monster (Undead) - 30 Day D&D Challenge

With power and undead life eternal
the night seems like a good place to drench
your boredom in.
Favourite Undead

Zombies, skeletons, ghosts, liches are all nice undead assets for a game master who wants the characters to feel that edge of horror - but vampires add dimensions of lust, power, and eternal boredom.
There are vampires in the game world. Beware, and collect garlic flowers.

Favourite NPC - 30 Day D&D Challenge

The ultimate showdown is always between
the DM's favourite NPC (left) and the PC of his girlfriend.
Favourite NPC

I already wrote that most of my created PCs tend to find their way into the game world as NPCs. I like to create characters, and wether I play them, another player does it doesn't matter.
Create interesting characters and let them inhabit the game world.

Favourite Dungeon Type - 30 Day D&D Challenge

I might actually use this one-page dungeon level...
Favourite Dungeon Type

Those that are fun, challenging, and make sense. If you happen to find a lost and abandoned puppy of hell - get the poor thing out of there.

Favourite Adventure - 30 Day D&D Challenge

X1 - The Isle of Dread
With an illustration like this I just might
want to run the adventure in the future.

My favourite D&D adventure I ran

I never ran an official D&D adventure. I considered the Isle of Dread a few times, when I read the D&D BECM Expert rules, but there was little point in that - my players didn't want to play any D&D at that time.

The Isle of Dread cover showed that T-rex. And I wasn't sure wether to like, or hate dinosaurs in rpgs. Dragons were okay, but dinosaurs didn't seem mysterious enough. Although they probably are.

Craziest Thing Happened - 30 Day D&D Challenge

'You know, TPKs shouldn't exist in the first place.'
Craziest thing happened playing D&D

The first ever AD&D session with my players had been cut short by a total party kill (tpk). We were used to playing Das Schwarze Auge where characters had around 30 hit points at first level, and weapon damage was around 1d6+3. I think I allowed the AD&D player characters to start with maximum number of possible hit points: 4 to 10. The whole group was cut down during the first encounter. We started over, or something.
My players already hated AD&D. They wanted to play heroes of myth and movie magic. Not mages who could only cast one measly spell per day, and warriors who got slain in the first round.

Now, in contrast my Basic Fantasy group who consists solely of players who never played a pen&paper rpg before manage to evade encounters, and minimize damage far better - and their characters' hit points vary from 1 to 4. It's a party with three magic-users and a thief: two elves, a human, and a halfling. Maybe the new players are smarter ...

Favourite Characters Not Played - 30 Day D&D Challenge

All the characters not played are still waiting in line
to get into the Dungeon.
My name is Legion, cause we're many

DMs get to play all the time, but not with their own player characters. I couldn't list, nor do I remember all the characters I created for D&D and then not played them. There were many.

I always enjoy creating NPCs, minor or major. So, why worry about my own PC when I create whole worlds and each of their inhabitants, and travellers.

Well, concentrating on playing just one character can be a challenge, and rewarding, too. Acting on stage in theatre I find playing one role relaxing, while as a DM running a 'whole world' can be a little taxing at times.

I'd like to play in a few one-shot games in the future. Especially with Fate Accelerated - for which I created a few characters already.

Favourite Character Played - 30 Day D&D Challenge

AD&D 2nd Edition half-elven bard in the dungeon
sings your fear away.
My favourite D&D character (played)

Trouble is that I actually played D&D as a player on a very few occasions. I created many characters, of course, but they were used as NPCs only, if at all. There was this one half-elven bard, that I played once. I mentioned him elsewhere on the blog, and I feel most of the information given here is redundant ... Anyway, I liked the bard, and got to play him for about one or two game sessions.

Never played D&D as a player after that.

Telecanter's Receding Rules offers a nice take on bards and their songs. And then, of course, there is THE Bard's Song by Blind Guardian.

Favourite Edition - 30 Day D&D Challenge

My favourite D&D edition is the one
with the dungeons and the dragons in it.
My favourite edition of Dungeons&Dragons

My first D&D was AD&D 2nd Edition, and I still like it best, although I don't play it right now, and haven't played since school. There are quite a few things I'd houserule, and I'd drop most of the optional rules, so in its essence it would be D&D, and not advanced, but gone back a few steps. I run Basic Fantasy in a similar way.

My second D&D edition was the BECM sets of which I loved the Companion rules best. I never played that edition. I'd love to read through the books again, but they're gone.

That being said, I love Dungeons&Dragons. Retroclones, simulacrum games, or the original. And yes, I'd probably buy D&D Next one day.

Favourite Deity - 30 Day D&D Challenge

Üenya - Petty Goddes of Lost Tunes
My favourite deity

You might remember the 80-ies series Robin of Sherwood. (And you will probably know Ray Winstone, who starred as Will Scarlet, from some fine movies such as The Proposition, or Tracker.)

There was the mysterious character named Herne the Hunter who laid a quest on Robin, gave him weapons, and healed him when necessary. A crazy old hermit with a few magic tricks, or a minor deity.
I read the entry on Herne in the AD&D 2nd Edition Legends&Lore book, and I have to say, although I didn't like the description therein that much, the mysterious character of Herne is still my favourite deity.
Apart from the Petty Goddess of Lost Tunes, Üenya, of course.

For a list of participating blogs read d20 Dark Ages' compilation.

Favourite Individual Die - 30 Day D&D Challenge

Such a useful regular hexahedron.
My favourite die

d6

Works nice for Star Wars WEG, MiniSix, Risus, and D&D damage rolls, spotting secret doors, and things like that.

Favourite Game World - 30 Day D&D Challenge

Mad-Kyndalanth
World of Wonder, Rifts of Magic
My favourite game world

There haven't been too many 'official' game worlds I explored with rpg characters: the Star Wars universe, Shadowrun's North America and Europe, Aventurien. None of the D&D worlds, although I owned a few campaign settings. I played a few of my  homebrew fantasy worlds as a DM, my favourite being Mad-Kyndalanth, which was basically used for sandbox exploration with a few metaplot elements.

I've run two long fantasy campaigns on Mad-Kyndalanth, and transferred the Morgansfort campaign onto Mad-Kyndalanth, as well.

Favourite Playable Class - 30 Day D&D Challenge

Quick Krita sketch.
My Favourite Playable Class

It is the thief. So, no strictly white box for me. I like the other classes, too, and though I'm not prejudiced against one or the other, somehow I like the thief class best.
It's the probably about the climbing sheer surfaces, disarming traps, and other neat feats special abilities. Cast aside the stereotypes and you can have tall thieves, strong thieves, intelligent thieves, ugly thieves, wise thieves, thieves without cloaks, thieves with not just daggers and knives, thieves who flirt with fighters, thieves who backstab only for a greater cause (how ridiculous does that sound?), thieves who steal hearts instead of gold-necklaces, and some thieves who give their own in return.

Thieves can be pretty versatile characters. Female thieves rock. Taking my favourite playable character race into account, I'd pick a human female thief.

Favourite Playable Race - 30 Day D&D Challenge

Quick Krita Sketch.

This is Day 2 of the D&D Challange.

Favourite Playable Race

When I think back and try to remember the characters I played I come to one conclusion only: I played humans. Never cared to play dwarf, or elf. I created a half-elven bard for AD&D 2nd Edition once. But then I've been the DM most of the time. So, who knows what I'd pick if I was a player some time soon? But the answer to the question is definite: Humans are my favourite playable race in D&D-ish roleplaying games. (Star Wars, too.)

How You Got Started - 30 Day D&D Blog Challenge

I'm a bit confused ... Who started the blog challenge? Tenkar linked to Polar Bear Dreams and Stranger Things. Anyway, it's day one.

How I got started with D&D

I started playing roleplaying games with "Das Schwarze Auge - Die Helden des Schwarzen Auges". Word reached us that D&D was kinda weird and had ridiculous rules (only thieves can move silently, AC, no parry, and stuff) so I stayed away from it for a while. But eventually I wanted to read the English version of the D&D rules, and put them on my birthday wish list, asking specifically for the D&D Basic Set. I got AD&D 2nd Edition PHB and DMG for my 14th (?) birthday.

Still got both books, and like them.
